Every time she returned, she saw the rising women in Rwanda investing in themselves.
What do you want to earn money for, she would ask the determined women?
“School fees” was always the first answer.
It never surprised her, she thought as she looked out the front door and saw the beautiful faces with bright white teeth giggle as they played. The Mamas always put themselves last. Their children and their children’s future always.
It was the last visit that made her heart smile. She didn’t recognize the same rising women she saw a year ago. They all had new hair styles and new clothes! It was then she smiled and thought: This is what it is all about. Now the mamas are earning enough money to put themselves first.
This is the first Songa design that was designed entirely by Jacqueline, one of the artisans we work with. It is our intention to continue to introduce artisan-designed originals!
