TASARA PENDANT

Action expresses priority. —Ghandi

The last time you saw her, you both were living in a small garden apartment in Chicago’s Wrigleyville neighborhood. She was your best friend from college. You decided to move to the mid-west because she of her.

You each met your future husbands there. Life got busy and you eventually moved to the West Coast. A few text messages were exchanged. She welcomed one child. Then two. Lastly three. You promise her you’ll meet her youngest before she turns 18.

You decide its been too long. No more scattered phone calls or lengthy text messages. No more updates about her life from Facebook.

She throws her arms around you rocking you back and forth in the warmth of this long awaited hug. She compliments you on your Tasara necklace and you are beaming. Soon you are swapping stories from long ago, “Remember that guy??”

While speeding down the highway towards the suburbs, you realize that it’s the people who make you feel like you matter; those rare gems are the ones who you miss the most.

Artisans train to make our designs on a regular basis to meet the high quality standards we require. Designs can take a woman between 3 - 5 days to create depending on how intricate the weave is. Our team monitors production throughout the process to minimize corrections on a finished product, saving time and money.

Songa's designs are created using carefully selected natural materials that are locally sourced and eco-friendly. We use sisal plant, banana leaf, recycled paper, upcycled fabric and re-purposed cow horn that would otherwise end up in landfills. These materials ensure the highest quality design all while keeping in mind future generations who will inherit our planet.

'Songa' means 'the path forward' in Swahili. Each design the women make furthers them along the path of financial independence. "I thank those who buy my products because I was able to build a good house. I now have 12 pigs too!" - Harriette, paper bead artisan

"Songa is all about showcasing the woman artisan. They create beautiful designs from natural fibers!" Natalie@sustainablychic
